The photo-optical detector uses a diode and a receiver. Usually the light is emitted in a straight line. However, when the device fills with smoke, the light is refracted. The recipient registers this change and therefore triggers an alarm in the event of a fire. This is the most frequently used type of smoke detector in Germany.
Photo-thermal devices
Photo-thermal detectors combine the photo-optical function just described with a heat detector. They therefore also react to the strong development of heat that occurs in a fire. In theory, this additional feature improves protection. In practice, however, it usually has no effect, since the photo-optical function detects the smoke much earlier than the heat detector recognizes the corresponding heat development.
Ionization smoke detector for particularly good protection
An ionization smoke detector uses two electrodes between which there are electrically charged ions. This enables a current to flow. When smoke occurs, the ions settle on the smoke particles. This reduces the flow of electricity and then triggers an alarm. Ionization smoke detectors detect even the smallest amount of smoke and therefore make a significant contribution to safety. However, they contain environmentally harmful elements, so that their disposal is problematic. Therefore, they are only used very rarely.
